OUTSTANDING HISTORY OF BEN THANH MARKET

The area of Ben Thanh market before 1911 used to be ponds, lakes, fields and canals near Gia Dinh citadel and also near the Saigon old market and Charner canal now Nguyen Hue Boulevard or Nguyen Hue Pedestrian Street.

Ben Thanh Market, which used to be a place where ponds and lakes has now become the busiest shopping mall market in Ho Chi Minh City also known as Saigon City.

Ben Thanh Market is located in Ben Thanh Ward, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City surrounded with four roads that are Le Thanh Ton Street, Phan Chau Trinh Street, Phan Boi Chau Street and Quach Thi Trang Square. Ben Thanh Market was built in 1912 and completed in March 1914 with a total area of 13,051 square meters. The main gate of Ben Thanh Market is located in the south opposite the square of Quach Thi Trang site and is also near the train ticket office Saigon - My Tho.

The old market, from the 1790s when the new Gia Dinh citadel was completed, the area in Ben Thanh market today used to be lakes, canals and muddy canals and only markets on the canal connecting with Ben Nghe river wharfs in and out near the gate of Gia Dinh Citadel to trade and exchange goods. At present, the old market is located near Charner canal, now it is Nguyen Hue Boulevard. In 1859, after the French colonialists captured Gia Dinh citadel and Gia Dinh citadel was also destroyed and in 1870 the old market was also burned, in 1887 the French also filled the Charner canal, the French re-planned the Saigon area.

After the old market was burned and the Charner canal was filled, but people still traded and exchanged goods on the old market ground until 1911, the French began to choose the location to build the market, the market was built 1912 and inaugurated in March 1914 designed according to French architecture and maintained to this day.
