Coffee was introduced to Vietnam very early in the 1870s by the French and planted in the Saigon Botanical Gardens and replicated in the highlands such as DakLak, Da Lat, Gia Lai, Kon Tum and Dak Nong in the years 1930 and grown to this day. In 1990, Vietnamese coffee had grown and ranked 2nd in the world in terms of supplying coffee to the domestic and foreign coffee market. Buon Me Thuot Coffee in DakLak province in the highlands of Vietnam has always been famous for all time, the red basalt soil land of the DakLak plateau is the cradle of coffee and also known as the coffee paradise or the coffee kingdom.

It is expected that in the 2018-2019 crop year, the coffee area in Dak Lak province is 204,577 ha, a decrease of 231 ha compared to the 2017-2018 crop year; the average yield is estimated at 24.46 quintals/ ha. According to data from Dak Lak Statistical Office, in the crop year 2017-2018, the coffee area was 204.808 hectares, an increase of 1,071 hectares compared to the previous season. In which, the product area is 187,279 ha; the average yield reached 24.55 quintals/ ha; Total output is estimated at 459,785 tons, an increase of 11,975 tons compared to the 2016-2017 crop year. The whole province has 12 companies licensed to use Geographical Indications of Buon Ma Thuot, with a total area of 15,612.70 ha, registered output 48,691 tons/ year.

By the end of the 2017-2018 crop, localities have replanted 26,818 ha of coffee, reaching 64.48% of the plan, only in 2018, 4,862 ha have been replanted, reaching 71.09% of the plan. Regarding processing and export activities, in crop year 2017-2018 Dak Lak has 301 coffee processing establishments, an increase of 41 establishments compared to crop year 2016-2017; coffee exports reached 191,169 tons, down 9,993 tons; export turnover reached 365,020 million, down 80,238 million compared to the previous crop year. It is expected that in the 2018-2019 crop year, the coffee area in the province is 204,577 ha, a decrease of 231 ha compared to the 2017-2018 crop year; the average yield is estimated at 24.46 quintals/ ha; Total production is estimated at 464,175 tons. The province's point of view is not to increase the unplanned coffee area, focus on replanting coffee according to the plan approved by the Provincial People's Committee, improving productivity, output and quality to meet export demand. In particular, the province will pay attention to the development of specialty coffee products in Dak Lak province.
