History of Saigon City Central Post Office by Saigon Top Tours

In 1858, the French colonialists attacked Da Nang and 10 years later captured 6 southern provinces of Vietnam including Saigon Gia Dinh, Dinh Tuong... in 1868 the French colonialists wanted to build a miniature city of Paris in the center. In 1873, the French built "Saigon Steel Wire Department" - Saigon Post Office" at the center of the city. The designer of this building is Gustave Eiffel, he is a famous French architect who designed the Eiffel Tower in Paris. His full name is Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, born in 1832 and died in 1923. He was the designer for the inner steel frame of the Saigon Post Office, Long Bien bridge in Hanoi capital, Trang Tien bridge in Hue city. In 1878, the Saigon Steel Wire Department was established. In 1879, the first letters bearing the "stork" stamp (the first stamp that appeared in Vietnam) were sent from Saigon to all over and to the world.

In 1886, Saigon Central Post Office was rebuilt according to the design project of architect Villedieu and his assistant Foulhoux, because it was not enough to meet the increasing demand of people. In 1891, the new headquarters of Saigon Central Post Office was officially inaugurated and the building has a beautiful construction like today, seen from the outside like the first train stations in Europe.
